Botulinum Toxin
Natural substances in the skin such as collagen (the major structural protein in the skin), elastin (the protein that causes tissues to stretch) and hyaluronic acid (gives skin volume) decrease with age, causing wrinkles to form. Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting or raising eyebrows can cause the formation of facial lines such as frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines.
How long can the effects of Botulinum Toxin last?
Botulinum Toxin injections usually start to work one to three days after the injection. Most will see visible results about 1 to 2 weeks after the injection. These results are likely to last up to 6 months, depending on your lifestyle, metabolic rate as well facial strength.
Do note that the effects of the first treatment is likely to be the shortest as the muscles will be trained over time to relax with repeated sessions, therefore stretching the lifespan of the injection. Repeated treatments will be necessary for continued effect.

What is Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin obtained from bacteria that has multiple medical uses. It blocks signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause the underlying muscles to contract. It relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, temporarily reduces the contraction and hence resulting in smoothening of facial lines and preventing new ones from forming.
Therapeutic uses of Botulinum Toxin include:
- Chronic migraine
- Muscle spasms
- Cervical Dystonia (Involuntary contraction of neck and / or shoulder muscles, causing head to be in a uncomfortable position)
- Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating in the underarms)
- Some bladder disorders
Cosmetic uses include relaxation of facial and neck muscles:
- To smoothen frown lines on the forehead and crow’s feet around the eye
- To reduce lines around the lips
- For jaw slimming
- To lift lower face and chin
There are different formulations of botulinum toxin that are commercially available and medically approved, such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin.
What should I expect during the procedure?
The treated area will be cleansed before the procedure. The procedure for each treated area will last around 10 minutes. There may be slight discomfort during the injections.
Who will not be recommended for the treatment?
- Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Those who are allergic to cow’s protein
