Tranexamic Acid for Brighter, More Even Skin

Pigmentation happens when your skin produces too much melanin. This can be triggered by sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, or injury and can affect one’s cheeks, chin, forehead, nose, and upper lip. Because it’s difficult to conceal, many affected individuals often feel self-consciousness and diminished self-confidence. Fortunately, several interventions have emerged to address both its physical and psychological impacts. Among these is tranexamic acid (TXA).

What is Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid (often called TXA) has become a popular option for helping with stubborn pigmentation and uneven skin tone. It can be used to treat pigmentation/melasma orally, topically, or via injections. It has been shown to reduce the appearance of dark spots and skin pigmentation and has an overall brightening effect. This could be due to its ability to inhibit UV-induced plasmin activity and suppress melanin production. These actions enable it to be an effective intervention for issues such as:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Melasma
  • Dark spots
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation (marks left behind after acne)

How does it work?

Tranexamic acid works by:

  • Calming inflammation that leads to darkening of the skin
  • Reducing signals that tell pigment cells to produce excess melanin
  • Supporting a more even distribution of pigment over time

Since TXA indirectly regulates melanogenesis without whitening the skin or producing toxicity, it offers a safer profile for long-term use.

Ready to Find Out if Tranexamic Acid Is Right for You?

If you’re struggling with uneven skin tone or stubborn pigmentation, our doctor will be happy to assess your skin and recommend a safe, personalised plan. Book a consultation with us to understand whether tranexamic acid or a combination therapy is suitable for your skin concerns.

How Is Tranexamic Acid Administered?

Depending on the doctor’s recommendation and what suits your skin, TXA may be given in different ways:

  • Topical Creams or Serums

Applied directly on the skin and may be combined with other brightening ingredients.

  • Oral Medication

Low-dose tablets taken under medical supervision.

  •  Intradermal

Small amounts of TXA are delivered into the superficial layers of the skin via microinjections by hand or the injector gun to target pigmentation more directly. Our doctors may also combine TXA with treatments such as lasers or skin boosters, depending on the patient’s skin condition.

What Is the Downtime?

  • Topical TXA: Generally, no downtime.
  • Oral TXA: No downtime, but requires monitoring and medical approval.
  • Microinjections: Mild redness or tiny bumps may occur for 1–2 days.

Can Tranexamic Acid Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Yes! TXA is often part of a broader pigmentation management plan.

Depending on your skin, your doctor may combine it with Micro Laser Resurfacing, Pico lasers, and/or skin boosters.

Benefits of Tranexamic Acid:

When used appropriately and with proper medical assessment, patients may notice:

  • A more even skin tone
  • Lightening of dark spots
  • Reduced redness or blotchiness
  • Improvement in pigmentation caused by inflammation (e.g., acne marks)
  • Brighter, more uniform-looking skin
