What is Gut Health?

The digestive tract, which is the largest part of the digestive system, is like a long tube that runs from the mouth to the anus. It includes the stomach, small and large intestines. When one consumes food, the microorganisms that live inside the small and large intestines will break the food down into nutrients that can be absorbed through the digestive tract. The nutrients are used to fuel your body’s various biological cycles and processes.

Our gut health, otherwise known as gut microbiome, refers to the health of this digestive system and the health of the microorganisms living inside your digestive tract.

How does screening of gut health benefit me?

We have always thought that our gut only helps to supplement our digestion. Recent research has increasingly demonstrated that the gut microbiome plays a vital role in many seemingly unrelated health aspects such as mental wellness, cardiovascular health, and other chronic diseases. In fact, the difference in one’s gut microbiome can have varying sugar, insulin and fat responses of up to 10 times for the same food!

Understanding the composition of gut health allows you to have insights on how your gut microbiome harvests energy from your food, influences your mood, heart, gut and liver health. It helps you to:

Adopt healthier lifestyle choices
Identify nutritional deficiencies
Potentially prevent the development of certain disorders associated with gut microbiome imbalance

How can I screen for my gut health?

You will be provided with a specimen container for the collection of your stool specimen. After collection, you can just drop the specimen off at our clinic.

What can I expect for my gut health report?

The report will take around 3 weeks to generate.

Besides analysing your gut bacteria based on an Asian-centric population database, the report provides specific dietary and lifestyle recommendations and probiotic formulation recommendations suited for your state of health.

What are the possible symptoms of an unhealthy gut?

It may manifest through:

Digestive issues eg constipation, bloatedness, diarrhoea
Mental issues eg Anxiety, Moodiness, Irritability, trouble with concentration
Fatigue or Insomnia
Skin Issues eg breakout upon consumption of certain foods
