Eye bags are formed due to the weakening of the muscles around the eye, resulting in a gravitational pull that causes a pouch to form. Over time, there may be an accumulation of excess fat deposits in the pouch, producing what we commonly known as eye bags.
We commonly associate the existence of eye bags with a lack of sleep or the natural ageing process. There are actually many causes of eye bags:
The lack of sleep causes your blood vessels to dilate and increases the retention of blood and fluid around the eyes, resulting in a puffy and swollen appearance in the under-eye area.
Family history has a part to play in the development of eye bags as well. Some people have a stronger genetic disposition that causes eye bags to appear more prominently as they age.
When your body is undergoing stress, blood is transported away from your face to your vital organs, causing your face to look pale and drained. On top of that, stress could also affect your sleep cycle, resulting in a lack of restorative sleep that causes an increase in the retention of blood and fluid, further accentuating the swelling.
When allergic reactions occur, cells in your body release a chemical component that causes fluids to leak from your capillaries, resulting in the swelling and puffiness of the lower-eye area.
As one ages, collagen in your skin starts to degrade, and there is also a reduction in the production of skin-boosting collagen, resulting in sagging of the skin and formation of the pouch where excess fat deposits lie.
Eye bags are generally classified into 3 main types.
Type 1 eye bags are mild and the least prominent of the few types. It occurs when there is only a mild accumulation of fat deposits in the under-eye area. They are generally only visible when one is looking upwards.
Type 2 eye bags are more apparent as there is a larger amount of excess fat deposits accumulated below the eye. These fat deposits are enough to cause small semi-circle shapes to form.
Type 3 eye bags are the most distinct. Large accumulations of excess fat deposits result in larger semi-circle, making the eye bags prominent and distinct. This can cause the individual to look more aged and tired than in reality.
Treatment options for eye bag removal in the past have largely relied on blepharoplasty which is a surgical procedure that involves incision and repositioning of fat pads of the eye. This procedure usually entails significant downtime and can cause discomfort which lasts for weeks. There is also a degree of risk associated with any form of surgery.
Fotona non-surgical eye bag reduction uses a fractional non-ablative handpiece at the optimum spot size to provide significant tightening of the targeted under eye bag area from the inside (the palpebral conjunctiva). The tightening reduces the appearance of undereye bags with up to 70% of our patients reporting satisfaction with the treatment and visible reduction of the fat bulge under the eye area.
The Fotona procedure is fast, lasting only about 30 minutes and is relatively painless requiring only anaesthetic eyedrops and eye shields.
Fusion Medical uses DERMA-SPRING EYE which is specially designed for the delicate eye area. Numbing cream and local anaesthesia are first applied to the eye area before inserting a special blunt needle in the skin. The blunt needle has the flexibility to push the blood vessels aside while it is being inserted into the eye area. As a result, there is less bruising, swelling and bleeding.
This multiple insertions of the needle in the dermis stimulate new collagen and increase its production. The continuous skin stimulation will also come from the PDO thread used, and these threads can be safely absorbed into the body system, reducing the sagging around the eyes and removing wrinkles.
For thread lifts, we will apply a numbing cream to the area about 30 minutes before treatment and you will experience minimal discomfort, if any. Downtime is usually in the form of slight swelling and redness around the eyes for a few days.
There is minimal pain experienced for both treatment options.
Both treatment options are minimally invasive and have little to no downtime.
Downtime is usually in the form of slight swelling and redness around the eyes for a few days, if any.
For Fotona, some patients obtain excellent results with 1 session alone whilst others require maintenance of 2-3 sessions per year.
For thread lifts, you only need 1 session as the results can last up to 8-12 months.
For better results, one might consider combining the treatment with laser rejuvenation and tightening of the outside skin around the eyes with or without the use of dermal fillers.
