Work Permit and pre-employment medical check-ups

The examination, chest X-ray and blood tests are done under one roof at Wheelock Place. Bring your MOM letter or your employer's form, and the doctor completes the report it asks for.

What does a Work Permit medical check-up include?

MOM's form or your employer's: the form sets the tests.

A Work Permit medical check-up is a doctor's examination plus the tests MOM requires. It screens for four infectious diseases: tuberculosis (by chest X-ray), HIV, syphilis and malaria. The doctor also checks your general health, including blood pressure, vision and hearing, and certifies on MOM's form whether you are fit for the job.

A pre-employment check-up follows your employer's own form instead, and what it asks for depends on the job. Employment Pass holders need a medical only if MOM's in-principle approval (IPA) letter asks for one. We also do S Pass medicals.

With the X-ray room and blood taking on site, the examination, chest X-ray and blood tests can be done in one visit.

  • 4 infections — TB, HIV, syphilis and malaria, as MOM requires
  • Within 2 weeks — of arrival, for new Work Permit holders
  • One visit — examination, X-ray and blood tests on site
  • Form-led — a pre-employment check follows your employer's form

Which check-up

Which work medical do you need?

It depends on your pass and your employer. Work Permit holders follow MOM's form and tests. Employment Pass holders need a medical only when the IPA letter says so. A pre-employment check-up follows the employer's own form. Bring whichever letter or form you have, and we match the check-up to it.

Due within two weeks of arriving in Singapore. It includes an examination, a chest X-ray taken in Singapore, urine tests, and blood tests for HIV, syphilis and malaria. Some workers must go to MOM's Onboard centre or an Anchor Operator instead of a clinic; check the IPA letter or ask the employer.

Your check-up, step by step

Send the form. Examine. Test. Report.

  1. Send the form

When you book, send the MOM letter or your employer's form, so we can confirm the tests, the fee and who pays.

  2. Examine

Bring your passport or ID. The doctor goes through your medical history and examines you, including blood pressure, vision and hearing where the form asks.

  3. Test

The chest X-ray, blood and urine samples on the form are taken on site, in the same visit.

  4. Report

The doctor reviews the results and completes the form. We submit Work Permit results to MOM online; other forms are returned as your employer instructs.

Questions

A work medical answers one question: are you fit for this job? It is not a full health check.

The doctor explains anything that needs follow-up. For a wider look at your health, see our health screening packages.

Work Permit, Pre-Employment and Employment Check-Ups: frequently asked questions

What tests are included in a Work Permit medical check-up?

MOM's medical examination screens new Work Permit holders for four infectious diseases: tuberculosis, HIV, syphilis and malaria. That means a chest X-ray taken in Singapore, blood tests and urine tests, plus a doctor's examination of your general health, including blood pressure, vision and hearing. The doctor then certifies on MOM's form whether you are fit for the job.

When must a new Work Permit holder do the medical?

MOM generally requires the medical examination within two weeks of arriving in Singapore. Depending on the worker's programme, it is done at MOM's Onboard centre, at the Anchor Operator for the area where the worker will live, or at a local clinic such as ours. The IPA letter or the employer can tell you which applies.

How much does a pre-employment medical check-up cost?

The cost of a pre-employment or Work Permit medical check-up depends on the form it is for and the tests that form requires, such as an examination, a chest X-ray, and blood or urine tests, plus any role-specific checks your employer adds. Under MOM's current rules, some Work Permit holders must use MOM's Onboard centre or an Anchor Operator instead of a local clinic. Send the form when booking so the clinic can confirm the fee and who pays.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

Please book first: work medicals at Wheelock Place are by appointment only, and we don't take walk-ins. When you book, send your MOM letter or your employer's form, so we can confirm the tests, the fee and who pays, and tell you how to prepare.

Do I need to fast before a work medical?

Only if a blood test on your form requires it; many employment examinations need no fasting. Send us the form when you book, and we'll tell you how to prepare.

What is the six-monthly medical examination (6ME)?

It is MOM's check every six months for female Work Permit holders under 50, including migrant domestic workers. Pregnancy and syphilis are tested each time, HIV every two years and tuberculosis once after two years in Singapore, with a BMI check. MOM posts the employer a letter and form when it is due; bring both, with the worker's passport or Work Permit card. For domestic workers, MOM asks employers not to be present during the examination.

What happens if a result is abnormal?

The doctor explains the result and what it means for you. You may need a repeat test, treatment or a specialist's review before the form can be completed. Whether the pass or the job goes ahead is decided by MOM or your employer, under their own rules.

Will my employer see my full medical history?

No. Your employer (and, for a Work Permit, the employment agent) receives what the form covers, such as whether you are fit for the job, any restrictions and the specified results, and only with your consent. Your wider medical record is not released with it.
